Better Boundaries

How to Apply SE Boundary Work More Powerfully and Effectively with Your Clients

Boundary rupture is pervasive in trauma… yet it shows up differently for each client and can be tricky to work with. When and how do you apply which type of SE boundary work with your unique client? If you go to fast, your client may be overwhelmed and reluctant to try it again for a good long while. If you’re too hesitant with boundary work, your client may suffer longer than needed with feelings of hopelessness, collapse, and despair.

Boundary work is specifically introduced in Beginning year, Module 2, a time when (let’s be honest) many students are overwhelmed by their own reactions to the lectures. Even if you were one of the few who stayed awake, alert and engaged, still so much of SE rides on the principles of boundary work, it takes years to begin to master it.

You probably learned variations of boundary bubble, proximity in the room, approach/stop. But what flavor of boundary work makes sense with your client? How do you introduce boundary work to them and what wording/languaging helps them to get the most out of it? What are you tracking as practitioner, and how do you respond according to what you’re noticing?

In this workshop you’ll have a chance to review and learn more about SE boundary work and broaden your repertoire with variations of boundary work. You’ll get to integrate and explore with experientials. Plus there will be time for discussion and Q & A about applying SE boundary work with your clients.

You’ll come away with:

  • A better understanding of physiological effects of boundary work (what you’re looking for when you do SE, and how different that is from only talking about boundaries)

  • More developed skills for working with boundaries (so you know when to do different types of boundary work so you have variations of boundary work that meet the needs of your clients as they progress in their SE work)

  • More confidence in when and how to work with SE boundaries (so you can hold steady when clients survival energy comes surging through and help them renegotiate all that activation instead of plummeting back into FFFF patterns)

  • Appreciation for how to work with SE boundaries in person and on Zoom (so you can work effectively and make the most out of both situations)
